The Montgomery Biscuits and the Biscuits Charities celebrated Charities Night on August 26 at Riverwalk Stadium with proceeds from the evening's "Take the Shirt Off Our Back" Jersey Auction benefiting the River Region United Way.

From the opening pitch, thrown out by 2011 River Region United Way Campaign Chairman Daniel Hughes, the entire evening was all Biscuits - all the time.

After the pre-game festivities, it was off to the radio booth where 2012 incoming Board President Roger Spain was interviewed by local sports legend Doug Amos. Doug was no stranger to the United Way himself and shared how he had seen the impact United Way agencies have made on our community. Thanks Doug for a great interview - done right in the middle of a third-inning Biscuits scoring spree no less!

The Carolina Mudcats even added to the night by taking a whooping from our hometown Biscuits by the score of 12-9. At the conclusion of the game, the Biscuits Charities, represented by Biscuits General Manager Marla Vickers presented a check in the amount $4120.00 to the River Region United Way representing the proceeds from the Jersey Auction.

The evening was capped off with fireworks and concluded an absolute fantastic night at the ballpark. What more can we say? Great game, great food, great baseball, fireworks and a wonderfully generous check to support the United Way and the agencies we serve.

The ECA Way!

Education Corporation of America owns and operates private institutions of higher education throughout the United States, serving thousands of students and providing qualified employees to businesses in the communities we serve. Among those fine institutions is Virginia College in Montgomery.

The staff and instructors at Virginia College met today to discuss their plans for the 2011 United Way campaign and how the ECA Way is the United Way.

The local campaign, led by Leigh Ann Fletcher and Chris Ducote (shown here) gathered all team members together to hear from Ms. Cynthia McCaghren (shown below) from the Children's Center in Montgomery - a United Way agency. Cynthia shared that because the Children's Center works with mentally and physically handicapped children, it often requires many types of specialized equipment which is purchased with funds provided by the local River Region United Way. Without those monies, many of the physical barriers that affect these children could not be overcome. Instead, because they have the necessary funding these kids are granted the opportunity to grow and develop as any child would in the public school system.

Perhaps the most impactful part of their meeting was the impromptu speech shared by one of Virginia College's own faculty. She shared that the United Way had touched her family many in many ways and she challenged others to think about how they had seen the United Way working in their community through the YMCA or Girl Scouts or Hospice. Her remarks were quite touching.

Thank you Virginia College and ECA for what you do for our community. Not only are you educating our future leaders you are showing us what real leadership looks like in the present. Thank you for living the ECA Way!

The Sabic Innovative Plastics facility in Burkville, AL is conducting our annual United Way Campaign. The United Way gives us all an opportunity to give back to our local communities, and we are proud of our on-going strong and enduring tradition of helping people in need. As a part of this year’s fund-raising campaign, we will be conducting a golf tournament at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery on Sept. 23that will be open to the public. You can look at his face and tell that Brian Turner is one happy man. For six years in a row now UPS employees and friends have taken to the links at the Robert Trent Jones course in Prattville to benefit the United Way. Taking the reins from Randy Allen who coordinated the tournament last year, Brian did a great job and must have paid the weatherman because it was a picture perfect day at RTJ.

Brian shared his thoughts with his team and everyone that assisted him in making the 2011 Tourney a HUGE success. Thanks BT for being a role model of how to LIVE UNITED.

I know I only have some of the email address’ of the players and volunteers for the 6^th Annual UPS United Way Golf Tournament, but I wanted to take the opportunity to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone. This was my first year as Tournament Director and I learned very much. The tournament was a bigger success than I initially thought thanks to the support from Jimmy Hill, Campaign Director for the River Region United Way, Ken Harms, our District Manager, all UPSers and their friends and family that played and volunteered.

I wanted to personally thank Bret Holladay for creating this great event six years ago and his continued support by driving over 750 miles to play in this year’s tournament. I owe a large portion of the success of this year’s tournament to Randy Allen and his advice he shared with me over the last several months. Behind the scenes support of this tournament started months ago with the help of Walter Lynch, Dean Lambert, Harold Blizzard, Jay Estes, Keith Washington, and Scott Wade getting sponsors, gifts etc. The tournament would not have been successful without a tremendous amount of help from Shay Turner (my wife), Gary Garvin, Jennifer Will, Charles Herbst, Chuck Moseley (and his entire family: Amy, Kyle and Kelly), Cristie Cassell, Kris Bliss, and the entire staff at Robert Trent Jones Capital Hill!

I sincerely hope everyone had a good time and I am already looking forward to the 7^th Annual Tournament supporting our River Region United Way! Saint James School prides itself on being a welcoming community ready to help students make great strides in their academic and personal growth, make good choices, and learn how to solve problems for today’s changing world. They are focused on developing self while at the same time caring for the needs of others.

With helping others in mind, the Pacesetter campaign at Saint James School began at their Back-to-School Teacher In-Service with more than 90 people attending. Loaned Executive Paula Mathis and Roger Spain, president-elect of the River Region United Way Board of Directors, spoke and introduced the 2011 United Way campaign video.

Director of Development Kim Hendrix served as the Employee Campaign Coordinator and announced that the campaign would run through mid-August. She encouraged all teachers, especially those who sponsor student volunteer groups, to consider United Way agencies for their school projects throughout the year.

Many thanks to Melba Richardson, Head of School, and Susan Atkins, the High School guidance counselor, for providing time during their busy back-to-school schedule to host us and thank you for showing us all how to LIVE UNITED.

He shoots...he scores!

While he may not be as famous as his Auburn University Basketball teammate Wesley Person, ole' #33 Michael Hardin knows a thing or two about good offense. He used to fill up the rim at Beard-Eaves in the 90's but now he is pounding the hardwood and touching lives across the River Region as the Managing Partner with New York Life Insurance in Montgomery.

Michael and his team at New York Life recently made a very generous contribution to the River Region United Way. Their teamwork as evidenced in their staff, make it possible for many people in our River Region to receive much needed services and assistance.

They recently met for an early morning breakfast and discussion about the United Way and the 48 partner agencies that serve our River Region.

ServisFirst understands that it takes all of us together to assist the 140,000+ people that need the services of a United Way agency each year.

Carl stressed to his team members the importance of the work of the United Way and how that work is everyone's responsibilty. And while Carl talks the talk, he also walks the walk through his own annual gift and by "loaning" ServisFirst executives like Amanda Spiers and Michael Wilbur to assist in the campaign each year.

Catholic Preparatory School President Anne Ceasar knows all about "Excellence". With nearly 25 years of prior teaching experience, Anne assumed her current post at Catholic in 2008 and has set high standards and lofty expectations ever since.

The same can be said for her attitude about the River Region United Way. Knowing that Catholic sets a standard for our community, she recently challenged staff members to do their part in supporting the 48 agencies that partner with the United Way. "If it is to be done, then do it well" could be a summary statement for Catholic and its President.

WOW is about all you can say if you've ever attended an ALFA Insurance Company United Way employee kickoff event. They know how to throw a party!

The 2011Campaign event was managed by referee Terrence Alexander and a whole team of ALFA employees dedicated to driving home the United Way message with a sports related theme.

It was obvious they had spent months gathering door prizes and collectables for give-a-ways and it all culminated in a fantastic event on August 4. Over 1000 employees attended four back-to-back meetings where they heard from various United Way speakers and Mrs. Jackie Buck of the Central Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Jackie was able to share with ALFA team members stories of the response of the Red Cross to the recent tornados in Tuscaloosa and north Alabama and how ALFA employees professional work and personal contributions were being used to positively impact the lives of those who were affected.

Executive Vice-President of Operations Mr. Lee Ellis shared with team members that this represented, "his favorite day of the year" because he was able to speak with every employee and share with them his passion for the United Way. His leadership by example and encouragement to do something bigger than yourself is one of the many reasons that ALFA leads the way in supporting the River Region United Way.

Thank you ALFA and that somehow doesn't seem sufficient but it's the only words we know. Thank you for all you do. You really are "making a difference" each and every day.

Aldridge, Borden & Company

Accountants understand numbers. Really good accountants, like those at Aldridge, Borden & Company understand that numbers translate into people and the things people do. With that in mind, the entire team at Aldridge Borden embarked on a recent "road trip" to visit the employees at the Montgomery Association for Retarded Citizens sheltered workshop known as the Burgess Center.

Employees at the Burgess Center understand numbers too. Each day they prepare any number of various parts for local businesses for use in the Montgomery community and beyond. In fact, because of a contractural agreement with GKN Aerospace in Tallassee, Burgess Center employees assemble a vacuum port used in the air systems of most U.S. Military Blackhawk helicopters.

Each employee, working to the best of his or her ability, assembles many parts each day...each job station dependent on the next until the work is complete. That's great teamwork and shows that numbers are more than just numbers...they really are people.

BankTrust...a perfect name for this group of community leaders.  Not only do they have a great reputation as a bank, they have a great reputation for building trust and doing the right thing in every circumstance, including their work in the community.

Thanks to the great leadership of Brad Armagost and Brad Duncan, among many others, Banktrust held a model campaign meeting recently at their main branch on Taylor Road in Montgomery. After a great breakfast and some inspiration from Russ Dunman, Executive Director at the River Region United Way, employees heard from David Seay - a United Way volunteer, an employee at ALFA Insurance and supporter of Camp ASCCA. David is a life-long Type 1 diabetic and understands that the work done by United Way agencies like Camp ASCCA teach children with diabetes to manage their disease so they can lead healthy and productive lives.

Like David, Banktrust understands that doing for others and helping those who can't always help themselves is vital to any community. Thank you Brad and Brad and everyone at BankTrust for what you do to help our community GIVE, ADVOCATE and VOLUNTEER.

Joe Hampton, Lynn Harris, Brian Davis and the entire team at Alagasco are to be commended for their community involvement. You can't look anywhere in the River Region and not see a place where Alagasco has left their impression.

Knowing that hundred of their customers were affected by the Alabama tornados of 4/27, Alagasco established a website just for storm victims at http://alagascohelps.com/index.php. Alagasco understands that neighbors help neighbors in time of need and I suspect that is why they are so supportive of the United Way.

Besides a great breakfast and good conversation, the employees at Algasco recently held their employee meetings to discuss the importance of community involvement and why their support of the United Way helps meet so many critical needs in our area.

Thank you Alagasco for all you do. You get it....and that's why you're a Pacesetter for United Way. You really set a great example for others to follow.

Wow, talk about taking one for the team! The folks at Target sure know how to have great fun and support their community at the same time.

For all of his efforts, Store Team Leader Jason Lentz got the pie in the face from Pricing Team Member Carolyn Howard. Employees donated funds for the privilege and Jason was the recipient. Looks like Carolyn might have enjoyed that a little too much!

Team members participated in other volunteer events at the Montgomery Area Food bank and included, Inetha Robinson, Jason Lentz, Dominque Mathis, Evelina Bialon, and Julie Larsen.

Kelly Cochran, Human Resources Director for Wilson Price, once again did a marvelous job of hosting their annual United Way Kickoff event. Attended by United Way representatives including Loaned Executive Jessie Sullivan from ALFA Insurance, the meeting was an upbeat mixture of door prizes, good food, giving incentives, lots of humor and some serious talk of the need to support those less fortunate in our community.

Introduced by Shareholder Edward G. Reifenberg, Buddy Morgan of the Montgomery Water Works and Sanitary Sewer Board shared his United Way story and emphasized the importance of community service and civic responsibility.

Wow! What a busy week for the City of Montgomery United Way campaign.

Directors from across the Parks and Recreation department gathered at Oak Park in the early morning hours to watch the 2011 United Way Campaign Video and learn about the increased participation of city employees. Ms. Natalie Norman, Assistant Athletic Superintendent, hosted their campaign kick-off and conveyed her passion for the non-profit partner agencies of the River Region United Way. Ms. Norman asked that each Director give every city employee the opportunity to participate by supporting the positive impact these agencies are making in the communities where we live and work. A special thanks to Mr. Wiley Steen, Director of Leisure Services & Facilities Management, for his continued support of the River Region United Way.

Imagine a beautiful auditorium...something about the size of a motion picture theatre with a huge back wall almost 50 feet across on which to broadcast the 2011 United Way video in living color. That was the scene at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts as they held their United Way campaign kickoff. A big thank you to MMFA for being such great community supporters and for hosting us in such a great location.

Ever been to a meeting that was delayed because they were "shoeing" a giraffe? Yea, me neither, until we went to the kick-off event at the Montgomery Zoo and Mann Museum. What a great group and they are so dedicated to the animals at the zoo and to supporting their community as well. Thank you Marcia Woodard, Deputy Director at the Zoo for hosting such a great event.

Ever been broke? No, not out of money broke, we've all done that. I mean broke as in not working and needing repair. Thanks to Katie Lloyd and the incredible staff at the City Maintenance Department, our fair city runs like clockwork because of their hard work and attention to detail. A 6:00 am meeting set the stage for this group as they gathered to watch the 2011 video and complete their pledge cards before another hot day on the job.

Rounding out a great week of meetings was the team at the Pete Peterson Lodge. After surviving a pounding rainstorm, they heard a great presentation from Montgomery Police Department Chief of Staff Brenda Mitchell. Thank you Parks and Recreation for all you do to support our local parks and support the United Way.

Rheem Manufacturing

Hosted by Majorie Baker, employees of Rheem Manufacturing Company toured the beautiful setting of the Exodus Community created by the Family Sunshine Center. These homes provide transitional housing to victims of family violence.

The Rheem Campaign Coordinator Jennifer Davis, managed to find out how well made the homes are by showing the beautiful new Rheem Water Heater!

The Exodus Community is all about provision in a time of crisis. Their staff provides a Lodging Kit prepared for families, who often move out of their previous homes with little more than the clothes on their back. Such kits are available as a service of the Family Sunshine Center as part of their program. After touring the Exodus Community, it was off to see the work being done at Child Protect, another partner agency of the River Region United Way.

Child Protect Executive Director, Jannah Bailey, provided a tour of their facility. The six Rheem employees commented on what a cheerful environment Child Protect provides for children and their families dealing with such a serious subject. The staff at Child Protect serves child victims of abuse through forensic interviews, advocacy and counseling in a non-threatening environment. The work they do is vital to helping law enforcement and other child advocate agencies do their jobs in these most unfortunate situations.

Alabama Power Company

Alabama Power Company employees enjoyed fellowship, education and food during their tour of two of the 48 partner agencies of the River Region United Way. Employees and staff of the Burgess Center displayed their detailed assembly of the filter compenents used in the maintenance of the Blackhawk helicopter. APC employees were fascinated to learn that products of several contracts held by The Burgess Center are for 3 companies in the River Region: GKN Aerospace, J.R. Smith Manufacturing Co., and Webster Industries.

APC Co-Chairs, Mr. Jeff Otwell and Mr. Dave Stewart will assist the 26 Alabama Power Employee Champions in completing their 2011 River Region United Way Campaign. APC employees have a generous history of providing support for the citizens of their River Region community.

The employees toured the newly renovated family quarters at The Salvation Army. Executive Director, Major Steve Justice, explained how individuals and families are helped through the coordination of services provided by the partner agencies of The River Region United Way. Lunch was provided by the excellent chef and daily volunteers at The Salvation Army.

River Bank & Trust

When it comes to reputation, River Bank & Trust has a good one...an excellent one in fact. Their employees are spread across the River Region serving the communities of Montgomery, Prattville and Wetumpka.

We were fortunate to catch all of them at their recent United Way Kickoff and I must say the only thing better looking than this bunch of folks is the size of their hearts. What a generous group of people.

When you consider that the average dollar gift among their employees ranks in the top % of all givers in the River Region, you can see that River Bank & Trust employees are among the most generous with not only their resources, but their time as well. If you ever need something done...and done well... call a River Bank & Trust employee and it's as good as done.

With special thanks to Chief Addie and Sargent Arrington of the Montgomery Fire Department, the Bell Road Fire Station was the host for the 2011 River Region United Way Campaign Kickoff for the City of Montgomery. Mayor Todd Strange and his leadership team assembled for a good breakfast, great conversation and a time to reflect on where the City of Montgomery United Way campaign has been and where it's headed in the future.

2011 River Region United Way volunteer Campaign Chairman Daniel Hughes spoke to those in attendance about the importance of taking care of "the least of these" in our community and how community service and contributing to something larger than ourselves is the backbone of any thriving city.

Mayor Todd Strange echoed Daniel's remarks and noted that the City of Montgomery personnel are among the most active in % of participation among the Pacesetter companies in the campaign. While employee participation is at 83% now, the Mayor challenged the City Department Supervisors and employees to increase their particpation rates to at least 85% and their overall giving by 5% over last year.

At that rate, the City of Montgomery will exceed $142,000 in donations for 2011 compared to just $79,000 five short years ago. That's real leadership and what being a Pacesetter is all about.

After viewing the 2011 campaign video, City Employee Campaign Coordinator Ed Card of the Department of Leisure Services encouraged those in attendance to run effecitve campaigns within their departments and to do so "sooner than later".

With the support of the Mayor, the coordination of Ed and Chief Brenda Mitchell of the Police Department, the enthuisiasm of the Department Supervisors and the community support message of the United Way, 2011 will be a banner year for the City of Montgomery campaign. Glad we were in a fire station because this campaign is off to a "smokin" start. Thank you City of Montgomery for showing us all how to LIVE UNITED.

The River Region United Way kicked off its 2011 Pacesetter campaign with a luncheon to a packed house at Riverwalk Stadium. Representatives from our Pacesetter firms were on hand to hear from Daniel Hughes, 2011 Campaign Chairman, about plans for the campaign this year.

The agencies supported by the United Way provide critical services to the community and to families struggling in today's economy. Because the needs of our citizens are greater than ever, the responsibility to financially support our United Way agencies is greater as well. Therefore, our Pacesetters are being challenged to raise their giving level by 3% to $2,000,000. We know you can Find A Way.

The Montgomery Chamber of Commerce has already completed their campaign with a 3% increase in pledges over last year and 100% participation. Way to go Chamber! You have certainly set the pace!

There is much work to be done to help those who need it in the River Region. Daniel Hughes and the Campaign Cabinet are off to a great start and your enthusiastic support is so important to this campaign.

River Region United Way CFC Director Xavier "Lew" Lewis says that is the only appropriate response when asked how you're are feeling about the 2010 Heart of Alabama Combined Federal Campaign. When MSgt. Bryan Johnson took the podium to begin the ceremonies of the 2010 Agency Fair it was obvious that lots of folks were already "fired up" to showcase their agencies and inform Federal employees on how they could direct their 2010 Federal contributions.

After a stunning rendition of the National Anthem by the Maxwell-Gunter Men's Chorale, Lt. General Allen Peck, Commander of Air University and this years Campaign Chairman welcomed all those present and reiterated the importance of giving back to our communities through our contributions and our public service. Russ Dunman, Executive Director of the River Region United Way was the keynote speaker and shared how services provided by the agencies of the United Way are not limited to persons by income, race or creed. They are available to all that seek assistance regardless of their status in life and he was thankful they were available 30 years ago when his own family needed the help of the United Way.

The CFC Kickoff Host, Col. Brian Killough, Commander of the 42nd Air Base Wing at Maxwell AFB closed the festivities by challenging those in attendance to do the "and then some" work required to make a difference in the lives of others. He noted that the really important things in life were not possessions or position but the positive change we can affect in the lives of others within our communities.

Thank you Lt. Gen. Peck and Col. Killough for hosting a wonderful CFC Kickoff event. Many lives in the River Region will be positively affected because of your commitment to give back to your community and the excellent leadership and example you have set for others. What do a Lobo, a Dolphin and a Cowboy have in common? Brad Wright, of course! Let me explain.

In 1980, Brad Wright was the quarterback of the New Mexico Lobos in college...and a pretty good quarterback at that. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins and played for the Dallas Cowboys. After his NFL career ended, he took a position with New York Life Insurance Company in Dallas, TX and eventually transferred to Montgomery as a Managing Partner with New York Life about four years ago. Brad knows a few things about football - both offensively and defensively.

In that spirit, Brad and the team at New York figured the best defense against a sluggish economy and rising needs within our community was to go on offense. So, the former quarterback called the play and delivered a completion to the River Region United Way in the form of a generous check. Thank you Brad Wright and the fine agents and staff at New York Life for your support of our community and for assisting United Way agencies in completing their importance mission. NFL Football Friday!

City, County, and Montgomery Public School Officials joined with the Community Impact Initiative of the River Region United Way to tackle Juvenile Diabetes and Obesity. United Way Worldwide and the NFL have had a partnership for years to promote healthy lifestyles among our adult and youth populations. It seemed a natural fit to incorporate their Back to Football Friday event with the City and County efforts on health awareness.

Today Mayor Todd Strange, Michael Briddell, Montgomery County Commissoner Elton Dean, River Region United Way Community Council Director Regina Walker, School Superintendent Barbara Thompson and Executive Director of River Region United Way, Russ Dunman met at the Court Square Fountain to hold a press conference announcing Back to Football Friday which will take place at Floyd Elementary School on September 10.

Representing the Philadelphia Eagles, Briddell commented on the City’s overall continuing promotion of healthy living along with Oakland Raider Dean and Atlanta Falcons Strange. The Chicago Bears Thompson will give the OK for students at Floyd Elementary to sport their favorite NFL jersey at school on the 10th of September. She also encouraged teachers and school personnel to plan a health related activity for the day.

While the day is designed to promote healthy living in our community there is an opportunity for the school to take home a health and wellness grant as well as a visit from a real NFL player. Businesses are encourage to jump on board as well by having their employees sport jerseys and plan a fun activity.

The goal of the River Region United Way Community Impact Initiative is to produce lasting changes in the community that address the root causes of problems. Progress Rail

Having once served as a campaign chairman for the United Way in his home state of Michigan, Alex Zaydel has seen first hand the United Way and one of their partner agencies, the American Red Cross respond to disaster. A small plane crash near their lake home began a series of events where lives were touched and families assisted without thought of their income or status. People needed help and the Red Cross was there to give it.

It is in that spirit that Alex encouraged the employees and team members at Progress Rail to consider contributing to the River Region United Way. Seeing your contributions benefit your community is very rewarding. To know that your donations are being used to help your neighbors is the best part of partnering with United Way agencies.

Employee Campaign Coordinator Shea Seele shared that all employee donations were being matched by the Caterpillar Foundation up to $4 million dollars. That's quite a commitment. Thank you Caterpillar and thank you Progress Rail for your commitment to the United Way. Your hearts are as big as the machinery you build!

When Virginia College in Montgomery say "Your success starts here", they mean it. Success is the best word to use when describing their recent United Way Campaign Kickoff. Campus President Madeline Little (left) welcomed faculty and staff to what she believed would be a "very successful campaign in 2010".

As the Montgomery campus of Education Corporation of America (ECA), Virginia College in Montgomery is rapidly growing, stressing quality and positive experiences for both students and faculty and making an impact on the lives of people. That's much the same mission of the River Region United Way.

Vice President of Operations Chris Ducote led the team meeting and reminded the participants of ECA's commitment to United Way and how important community involvement was to the process of education. Chris and his assistants Joanna Gillette and Kisha Jolly "schooled" the participants in the wonderful prizes and incentives available to all United Way donors and set a wonderful tone for giving that would exceed their 2009 levels.

Thank you Virginia College for your wonderful example. Your community focus and compassion for others is inspiring.

Autauga County Kick-Off

We're Off! That was the word in Autauga County as the Autauga County United Way kicked off it's 2010 Campaign with a breakfast held at the First United Methodist Church. Local dignitaries, civic and business leaders from all parts of the county were on hand to hear Don Forst, the 2010 Autauga County Chairman talk about plans for the campaign this year.

Don stressed the importance of the United Way and how the agencies supported by the United Way provided critical services to the community and to families struggling in today's economy. Because the needs of our citizens are greater than ever, Don explained that the responsibility to financially support our United Way agencies is greater as well.

Speaking on behalf of a United Way agency, Willis Bradford of the Prattville YMCA reiterated the importance of having a successful campaign in not only Autauga County but within the entire River Region. Obviously, his neighbors agreed! At the conclusion of the meeting, numerous volunteers swept to large boards and drew cards to begin their work within the community.

Eager to get the local campaign off to a good start, these volunteers are the backbone of any successful effort and their enthusiasm and dedication are essential to the work of the United Way. Thank you Autauga County. You inspire us all to make 2010 a great year for the United Way in the River Region.

Birdies for Brown

Under the imminent threat of rain, well over a hundred and twenty golfers took to the Robert Trent Jones Course at Capital Hill in Prattville for the 5th annual UPS/United Way Golf Tournament.

After eating a delicious meal provide by our friends at Outback Steakhouse in Prattville, the teams took to the links for a day of fun with a purpose.

Organized by local UPS employee Randy Allen (in red) and a team of volunteers, this annual event has become a really big deal to not only UPS employees but their guests as well. Randy shared with those in attendence how the United Way had impacted his family when his son was born. Passing the microphone to Brett Holiday (in pink shirt) Brett talked about his wife's battle with cancer and how the American Cancer Society (a United Way Agency) had played a crucial role in her recovery. So not only do these men share a passion for golf, they share a passion for the United Way because they've seen the positive influence these agencies can have on the lives of people in our community.

Following brief remarks from Guy Davis the 2010 River Region United Way Campaign Chairman, it was "off to the links" for the whole group. Thanks again to Randy Allen and UPS for a fantasitic tournament, a great time and a super effort for a worthy cause.

Rally in the Alley

To quote WSFA reporter Sally Pitts, "It's a party with a purpose". That was certainly the case Thursday evening, August 12 at the Alley and Alley Station. As the signature event of the 2010 River Region United Way, the Rally in the Alley was a street party with a very important community purpose - to support the 48 agencies that provide essential services to the citizens of the River Region.

Stretching from Dreamland BBQ all the way around to SaZa's Serious Italian Food, the event was co-sponsored by the River Region United Way and Emerge Montgomery. Emerge, in cooporation with the Public Relations Council of Montgomery collected assorted school supplies for the five counties served by the River Region United Way.

In addition to the great food, cold drinks and live music provided by the band "Moving Parts", participants were able to speak with over 30 community agencies who provided volunteer opportunities and information on their agency and the services they provide.

After comments by Mayor Todd Strange, 2010 Pacesetter Campaign Chairman Daniel Hughes announced that the 23 Pacesetter firms had raised a total of $1,848,536 dollars - a 5% increase over last year.

2010 Campaign Chairman Guy Davis then announced the overall campaign goal of $5,450,000. Thanking everyone for what they had done so far, Guy reminded everyone that there is much work to be done to help those who need it in the River Region.

If you weren't able to attend, you missed a great party. But it's not too late to reach into your pocket for a great purpose. Thank you River Region for supporting your local River Region United Way.

Amanda Davis and the folks at Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood pride themselves on things like quality, customer satisfaction, creativity and innovation, integrity, and diversity. These are still considered the underlying guides of each and every project that they tackle. It is with the same vigor that they approached the United Way campaign in 2010.

Being architects and enginneers, this firm knows quite a bit about building things. To build a good meeting you start with a good breakfast with lots of coffee and juice.... a great meeting room with comfortable chairs and a large viewing screen is a real plus and finally, have something important to talk about.

Amanda and her team of Elia Sorice, Jof Mehaffey, Max Vaughn, and Bryan McClure led their co-workers in a discussion of the River Region United Way and it's impact on the citizens of our community. Having been long time supporters of the United Way, Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood understands the impact that charitable giving has on a community and how charity, like construction, isn't about one person - its about the combined efforts of many people and what they can accomplish together.

Everyone knows UPS is tops in the Mail, Package and Freight Delivery industry. United Parcel Service (UPS) specializes in Courier Express Services, Freight Forwarding Services and Logistics Services. Coming August 14th, they'll be tops in golf as well.

Thanks to the efforts of Randy Allen, the South Alabama Transporation Manager, local (and some not-so local) UPS employees and other guests will be swinging for show while raising some dough for the River Region United Way. Held every year, the 5th Annual UPS/River Region United Way golf Tournament will be held at the Robert Trent Jones golf course in Prattville, AL.

Participants can begin their Saturday with an "aussie" lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse in Prattville and if they are not to full to swing their clubs, begin rounds at 2:00. Beverages are provided free of charge throughout the day. 144 participants will each be raising funds for the River Region United Way benefiting 48 agencies in Prattville, Montgomery and beyond.

In the tank for Rheem

If you've ever met C.E. Murrell at Rheem Manufacturing, odds are you remember him. Its not easy to forget a man who is that tall. Big arms and a large chest however aren't quite big enough to hold his huge heart. Its obvious that C.E. is a man who cares.

Not only does he care for the employees that work at the Rheem Manufacturing plant in Gunter Park, he cares for the people of the River Region as well. As the host for the Rheem employee campaign, C.E. introduced Rheem Employee Leah Price who shared with the Rheem staff about her experiences on a recent United Way tour. Having the opportunity to visit several United Way agencies with other Rheem team members, Leah was especially touched by the vocational training at the Burgess Center. A program of the Montgomery Area Retarted Citizens (MARC), Burgess participants perform critical work for a local company and manage a recycling center for the city of Montgomery. These jobs excite the Burgess Center employees because they can earn a paycheck, learn vital skills and make a positive contribution to their families and community.

Rheem is a leading provider of gas furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners, gas and electric water heaters and a host of other quality products. As a 2010 Pacesetter firm, they are also a leader in the River Region. It shows in their giving and in their people. Its obvious... Rheem cares.

Right on Target!

Okay, the folks at Target are pretty savvy to have a bulls-eye as their corporate logo. Unfortunately for Executive Team Leader Vincent Wooden, the bulls-eye was on his face.

As part of their United Way employee campaign, employees at the Target at Eastchase were encouraged to donate their change (bills and coins) to one of several jars. Each jar corresponded to an Executive Team Leader (supervisor). The supervisor with the most money collected in his or her jar at the end of the campaign had the distinction of receiving a pie in the face from his employees and peers.

Since the change in the jars was clearly visible, Vincent Wooden thought he had it made because he could see a $10 bill in the jar of Target Store Manager Jason Lentz. Little did he know that his jar had $1.09 more in loose change than Jason's bill. Uh oh! That meant a pie in the face for Wooden.

Despite the "targets" on his tee-shirt, a fresh lemon pie found its way to Vincent's face - all for a great cause and in a spirit of fun. Quite a breakfast!

Because of the dedication of Target Team Members, 96% of the employees are United Way supporters and their campaign pledges were up 380% over last year - that's not a typo - up 380%. Thank you Target Team Members. You guys really hit the mark! Isn't that right Vincent....

Food Services

Lip smacking good might best describe the meals produced by the staff at the City of Montgomery Food & Catering Services Department. It strives to provide citizens and visitors of Montgomery with the finest foods, friendliest service and warmest hospitality, wherever your recreational activities take you around our beautiful city.

Their hospitality was on display today as they hosted the United Way for their Employee Campaign Kickoff. Food Services Director Jimmy Lisenby shared with his employees how the United Way had assisted his neice from a very young age. Born with a serious medical condition and not expected to live, she is now a beautiful young teenager thanks, in part to the services she received through a United Way agency.

As part of their appreciation and in support of the River Region United Way, Food services will be holding a Boston Butt sale July 29th and 30th with proceeds going to the United Way. Cookin' Butts and Raisin' Bucks is a great idea and I'm confident the food will be as great as the folks who prepare it. Thanks again City of Montgomery Food & Catering Services Department. You guys are awesome!

Devout is an serious word. It's an adjective that usually means one of three things. (1.) a person or persons devoted to faithful worship or service. That certainly is one definition that can be attributed to the staff and leadership at Wilson, Price, Barranco, Blankenship & Billingsley. Their deep faith and commitment to God and to each other has made their firm one of the Southeast’s largest local CPA and consulting firms. Spend a few minutes with their United Way Employee Campaign Coordinator Kelly Cochran and you'll understand the importance that her faith holds in her everyday life. Its an attitude that permeates the entire firm.

(2.) Devout can also mean one who expresses devotion to a cause. Consider Wilson Price Shareholder Tom Gilliland...Tom has served as the Montgomery Area United Way President and Chief Volunteer Officer and the Campaign Chairman in 1999. He now serves on the Board of Directors for several community minded organizations including the American Red Cross of Central Alabama, the South Central Alabama Girl Scouts Council and the Lighthouse - all United Way agencies. His devotion to the cause of supporting the River Region United Way is without question. His contributions to this community are innumerable and his passion is something that he easily communicates.

Lastly, devout can be one who is earnest or sincere. That sums up the Wilson Price firm in a nutshell. You will not meet a group of people so sincere about helping their community. Their commitment to the United Way, its 48 agencies and the people they serve is a testimony to the type of quality people that are Wilson Price. Tom may have said it best when he commented, "Quality people do quality things". The "quality" people are devout about serving others and it shows in their support for the River Region United Way.

The City Communicates

Larry Fisher made it abundantly clear at the City of Montgomery Communications Department that giving to the United Way can be as simple as opening - or not opening a bottle of water. "For the price of bottle of water a day, you could give $365 to the United Way in a year." And Mr. Fisher is right. It doesn't take huge amounts of money from one or two people to fund the 48 agencies that work with the United Way. It takes the concerted effort of lots of people participating in large and small ways. Every dollar adds up and Larry Fisher understands that very well.

The United Way thanks the Communcations Department and the City of Montgomery for their committment to "communicate" and more importantly, demonstrate that important message.

Municipal Jail

Captain A.J. Hardy runs a tight ship at the City of Montgomery Municipal Jail Facility. The Municipal Jail typically houses persons arrested for misdemeanor charges as well as those serving jail sentences that have been mandated by the Municipal Court. But that's not all they do.

Capt. Hardy and his well trained staff understand that jail represents an opportunity for many people. Its a chance to re-evaluate and re-orient their lives from a path that leads to destruction onto a new road that leads to success. Because of that, they have programs to help inmates with job preparation, obtaining their G.E. D. or drug rehabilitation.

They also support the agencies of the River Region United Way. In fact, they've gone to great lengths to show their support by erecting signs and placing United Way pledge forms in common areas at the Municipal Jail so persons visiting their facilities have the opportunity to donate. So far, visiting prosecutors, defense attorneys, inmates and their families, jail employees and others have made pledges totaling over $5000. Wow!

Special thanks to the Montgomery Municipal Jail Facility. You guys are the greatest!

Let's Talk About ALFA

Alfa Insurance suggests that we "talk about tomorrow". But for just a moment, let's talk about today. Alfa Insurance is the crown jewel among Pacesetter firms. Not only do they have the largest campaign event, they do it all in one day. An amazing feat of planning and organization by Bo McCollum, Susie White and a host of other volunteers. Set to a musical theme, the entire event was named "Setting Records with United Way" and featured elaborate decorations, food, drink and music related door prizes for all attendees.

Certainly no great organization gets there without great leadership and that is certainly on display at ALFA. Executive Vice President of Operations Mr. Lee Ellis commented, "this is my favorite day of the year for two reasons. One...I get to be with each and every ALFA employee and two...I get to share what is really important to me and that is the United Way." Mr. Ellis shared that we all knew about the tough economic conditions in our state and nation. Yet, when times are toughest economically, the needs of people in our communities are greatest. For that very reason, this was a critical year for the United Way and its partner agencies. He encouraged ALFA employees to give cheerfully and generously.

And by every indication, thats exactly what the employees were prepared to do.

The impact that ALFA and its generosity has in the River Region is immeasurable. They are the model corporate citizen and the United Way and the River Region as a whole are fortunate to count them as supporters.

Long before the Mark & Kim Zaner expected the birth of little Eli, they had been United Way supporters. Using payroll deduction through their workplace, the Zaners never dreamed they would one day be the recipients of River Region United Way services.

Kim Zaner (left) said the family did not know of little Eli's diagnosis of Down Syndrome until his birth. Knowing that early childhood intervention is the key to improving quality of life in children with Downs, the Zaners solicited the help of several United Way agencies. She spoke of the critical assistance the family received shortly after Eli's birth including physical therapy and programs to improve cognitive development.

Today, Eli has completed Kindergarten and is looking forward to first grade in the Montgomery public school system. A bit shy at first, he was not too bashful to enjoy the teddy bear provided by Chief Art Baylor and the Montgomery Police Department. In fact, he may have just been in awe of the outstanding work done by the MPD. Not only do they protect the citizens of Montgomery, their contributions through the River Region United Way serve people well beyond their stated job duties.

Thank you Montgomery Police Department for what you do...not only for the Zaners but for the 125,000 people who will receive United Way services this year in the River Region. You really are Montgomery's Finest!

Aldridge Borden Company

Dave Borden and the outstanding folks at Aldridge Borden Company know a few things about the River Region United Way. As the 2009 Campaign Chairman, Dave's excellent leadership helped produced over $5.3 million dollars that were distributed to 48 partner agencies. So it comes at no surprise that Aldridge Borden would not only be a Pacesetter firm for the 2010 campaign, but be one that so well represents what community leadership is all about.

The continued generosity and support of Aldridge Borden has been critical to the United Way and they truly model what it is to be a Pacesetter firm. Their employees heard from Captain Roy Harris of the Salvation Army who explained how their giving made the work of the Salvation Army possible and received a hearty "thanks" from River Region United Way Chief Volunteer Officer Gene Crane.

City leads the way!

Being a leader is what Todd Strange is all about. In his role as Mayor of the City of Montgomery, not only does he display his leadership daily, it is evident in the team of people he has chosen to lead the City. As Mayor Strange and his Cabinet leaders met on this Wednesday morning, the focus was on leadership as it relates to community involvment.

A long-time supporter of the River Region United Way, the Mayor challenge his cabinet members to take the lead in showing their departments and the city as a whole how important it is to lead by example. "As a Pacesetter organization for United Way, we are setting the bar for the rest of the City", he noted. "They will look at what we do".

Led my Marcia Woodard with the Montgomery Zoo/Mann Museum and Ed Card of the City Parks and Recreation Department, the City of Montgomery campaign is well underway to surpassing the pledges posted in 2009.

Transformation at Frazer

Frazer Memorial UMC and the United Way have a lot in common. According to Senior Minister Tim Thompson, its all related to "transformation." Focusing on Chapter 12 from the Book of Romans, Tim noted that in assessing our lives individually we should exhibit humility, use our abilities in a gracious manner for the good of all, care deeply about the welfare, well-being and promotion of others. That sounds like many of the 48 agencies serving our commnity through the United Way.

As the only church chosen as a Pacesetter organization, Frazer has a long-standing reputation for doing what is best for our community. As Frazer members focus on "transformation" in 2010, their gifts and pledges to the United Way will be transforming the lives of those within our city who need assistance. Frazer has always identified with other peoples' circumstances. Their service to others is a testimony of their service to God. Thank you Frazer for being in the "transformation" business.

Alagasco gets Cookin'

Alabama Gas Company had a fantastic employee kickoff event at their Chestnut Street Service facility. Over 70 employees heard an inspiring message from Tay Ferguson. Tay was a former Brantwood Children's Home resident who now is married, a new father and a full time officer with the Montgomery Police Department. His story was evidence that the United Way is transforming lives in the River Region. Senior Leader Richard Ray gave his strong endorsement for the work done by United Way and pledged his commitment for 2010 and beyond.

Alabama Power Company Tours

Alabama Power Company employees from across central Alabama took the time to participate in tours of several United Way agencies. From Clanton to Greenville and all stops in-between, APC has always been a huge supporter of the River Region United Way and its 48 partner agencies.

Beginning at Goodwill Industries, employees learned first-hand about the process of receiving donated clothing and other goods and how Goodwill is able to reclaim, repair and breath new life into used items. Most of the donated goods are taken to the Goodwill Store and sold for very reasonable prices. Goodwill staffers explained that many of the items donated are brand new - they may still have the tags on them!

In fact, Goodwill is able to feature a fashion show each year of items donated to Goodwill Industries. From clothing, to furniture, shoes, games, books and more, Goodwill has it all.

After leaving Goodwill, APC employees were eager to visit the Burgess Center. The Burgess Center is operated by MARC. Under contract with GKN Aerospace in Tallassee, students at MARC are able to produce a vacuum port that is used in Blackhawk helicopters. After touring The Burgess Centers, employees learned about recycling at McInnis Recycling Center and were treated to a delicious lunch at the McInnis School.

Caddell Kick-Off!

The corporate motto at Caddell Construction Company is "Commitment to Excellence". Nowhere was that on better display than at their employee kick-off event for the United Way. Senior Leader Kirby Caddell reviewed some statistics from Caddell's giving in 2009 and commented that Caddell employees had contributed to the United Way at the 97% level. While that is extremely impressive, Kirby was quick to point out, "We are not a 97% company. We can do better!". That's what is meant by commitment to excellence. Thank you Kirby and employees at Caddell Construction. You are "finding a way" in the River Region.

River Bank & Trust

Employee Campaign Coordinator David Lewis was quick to point out that despite their humble beginings in a "trailer" several years ago, River Bank & Trust employees have always been known by thier willingness to do the right thing. And doing the right thing has paid huge dividends in growth..not only for the size of the Bank, but in their generosity to the United Way throughout the River Region. With branches in Autuaga, Elmore and Montgomery counties, River Bank & Trust employees are changing the lives of many people and making an impact everywhere.

ALFA Employee Tours

Bo McCollum and the employees at Alfa Insurance have been avid supporters of the United Way. It was no suprise that ALFA wanted to "find a way" to involve their employees with several United Way agencies prior to their scheduled employee Kickoff.

After taking time to see the Montgomery Area Non-Traditional Equestrians (MANE) and Brantwood Children's Home, ALFA employees were also interested in the work being done at Goodwill Industries, the Burgess Center and at McInnis Recycling. Rounding our their employee tour was a trip to Catholic Social Services.

Reaching the Summit

Summit America Senior Leader Daniel Hughes knows a few things about leadership. As the 2010 Pacesetter Campaign Chairman, his leadership is helping other Pacesetter firms "set the bar" for their United Way contributions in 2010. Daniel challenged the Summit America staff to contribute "generously" and ensured them that the work being done by the United Way was vital to the approximately 125,000 persons it serves in the River Region.

ServisFirst Bank

ServisFirst Bank holds a unique distinction of having 104% employee participation in United Way. Even their retired employees contribute through ServisFirst so their gifts can count toward their totals. That's committment! Led by Carl Barker, the ServisFirst employees were treated to a great breakfast and the 2010 Campaign Video as they made their pledges for the 2010 Campaign.

Sparkling Water Works Kick-Off

The Montgomery Water Works wasted no time getting out of the starting blocks. As a Pacesetter firm, their Employee Campaign Coordinator John Scanlon organized several meetings involving employees from all facets of the Water Works. From the Agrarian Center to the Bibb Street offices, The Montgomery Water Works sparkled in their enthusiasm and support for the United Way.

Much of the success for the generous support provided by the Montgomery Water Works can be attributed to their Senior Leader, Buddy Morgan. As Buddy said during their employee kick-off, "when you consider the impact and good works that the United Way does in the River Region, its hard not to give." Buddy and all the employees of the Montgomery Water Works are to be commended on their fine leadership.

Focus on the Agencies

Jannah Bailey of Child Protect took the lead in welcoming the Executive Directors from each of the 48 United Way Agencies to the Agency Campaign Kick-Off held at the Alley Bar. With gracious accomodations by Mike Watson and the Alley Bar staff, the Executive Directors had the opportunity to mingle in a relaxed setting, share ideas on program development, hear from Daniel Hughes, the 2010 Pacesetter Campaign Chairman as well as Guy Davis, the 2010 Campaign Chairman.

Guy challenged the Directors to increase the involvement and per capita giving of the employees at each agency. He then shared the 2010 Campaign video and encouraged each agency partner to have the "best campaign you've ever had within your agency."

Rheem Agency Tours

Employees at Rheem were guests of two United Way Agencies during their Agency Tour on June 10th. The tour began at the Burgess Center where vocational skills are on display as workers at MARC assemble vacuum ports for GKN Aersospace in Tallassee, Alabama. Used in Blackhawk helicopters, these parts are helping our soldiers as they protect our freedom. Rheem employees also saw the important work being done at the McGinnis Recycling Center.

After the stop at MARC, they were on to MANE, the Montgomery Area Non-Tradrational Equestrians. This agency (featured in our 2010 Campaign video) helps disabled children experience the motion involved in walking while gaining confidence from the back of a horse.

Rheem Employee Campaign Coordinator Jennifer Davis commented that, "the agency tours were great. We learned so much about what role the United Way plays in support of these agency partners. We're excited about beginning our campaign."

That sums up pretty well the Pacesetter firms for the 2010 River Region United Way campaign. While everyone in the River Region is raving about the all new 2010 Sonata from Hyundai, Mobis Alabama is quietly suppling the car plant with front and rear chassis modules, cockpits, airbag systems, bumpers and door-trim packages. They are also producing some important support for United Way agencies in 2010 and beyond.

Recently, Mobis Alabama LLC invited the United Way to conduct an employee campaign for some 650+ employees. With great enthusiasm and support from Mobis Alabama President and Chief Executive Officer Chul Soo Kim, the River Region United Way help Mobis FIND A WAY to support our agencies in the River Region. In the viewfinder is our 2010 Campaign Chairman, Mr. Guy Davis. Guy is an Area Executive with BB&T in Montgomery. As a Board Member of the River Region United Way, Guy has seen first-hand how United Way agencies provide much needed services to people throughout the River Region.

"We must get the message out that needs are on the rise. The economy is beginning to recover and we need your help now. Please find a way to give."
